The villages of Rome

The tour begins with you being picked up from your hotel. You will leave the city behind and drive along the Appia Antica into the Alban Hills towns and villages called Castelli Romani. A region that is famous for its long history and excellent wine.

Castel Gandolfo and Lake Albano

Visit the Castel Gandolfo, the Pope’s summer residence. The tranquil little town lies on the shore of Lake Albano, an impressive body of water that was formed by two overlapping volcanic craters.

San Nilo Basilica

You will then visit a 1000-year-old abbey. The Italian Byzantine Abbey of St. Mary in Grottaferrata was founded by San Nilo. This church contains artworks from the 12th and 16th Centuries. The abbey is home to religious Brazilians who are devotees of the Byzantine Rite of the Church of Constantinople. The monastery was founded about 50 years before the Byzantine Church split from the Roman Catholic Church; after the schism, the monastery stood steadfastly with the Church of Rome in the form of a crypt, which resulted in Catholics being allowed to participate in the celebrated Byzantine Rite in the abbey of St. Nilus and receive the sacraments.

You will continue on through beautiful forests to Frascati, which is famous for its breathtaking views and wine production. Frascati wine is a sweet and refreshing white wine. Your tour guide will also tell you about “porchetta”, the succulent pork that is a regional speciality. If you want, you can also book a wine tasting before returning to Rome.
